The Top 5 Beauty Trends from Milan Fashion Week
When it came to SS21 hair, makeup, and nails, Italy’s top designers were in the mood for something practical — reimagined for today’s lifestyle. From effortless hairstyles to bare skin and red lips, all the best beauty looks from Milan Fashion Week are proving consistent even during a completely unprecedented time.
As seen in New York and London, the beauty look at many shows in Milan was all about effortless looks that are practical and laidback. Think minimal makeup, a swipe of red lipstick or clear lip gloss, and easy to manage hairstyles. In an age of WFH, many of the shows — including Salvatore Ferragamo, Tod’s, and Boss — put forth bare skin lightly enhanced with nearly imperceptible coverage and strategic highlighting.
Perhaps the most practical and prominent makeup look of the season thus far, bare skin continued its takeover in Milan. At Max Mara, bare skin served as a canvas for the lips, and makeup artist Diane Kendal used various shades of red, from oxblood to crimson, depending on each model's skin tone.
Hairstylists showed us simple styles, like blunt bangs and chin-grazing bobs, that were refreshingly wearable. Blunt bangs of all lengths took center stage this season. At Prada, most of the models received fresh haircuts with blunt bangs that swept below the cheekbones. Hair was styled the evening before the presentation with the ghd Platinum+ Styler to ensure a lived-in look. At Versace and Dolce & Gabbana, blunt bangs hit at or above the eyebrow, while Ports 1961 and Fendi opted for a side-swept fringe.
After an overwhelming number of bare and opaque nails in New York and London, Milan brought out a rainbow of uplifting hues, from light blue to yellow to hot pink. Albeit not noted in this report, we also spotted grey (Vivetta), red (Dolce & Gabbana, Fendi), black (Fendi, Philipp Plein), and white (Philipp Plein) nail polish.

Elsewhere, there were sleek and more subtle iterations, as seen at Ports 1961 and Giorgio Armani. To get the look, hairstylists recommend using a generous amount of gel or wax to ensure the wet look lasts all day.
