Top 5 Trends: AMA Awards 2019
The biggest names in the music industry arrived in style for the 47th American Music Awards. Dressed in bright neons, show-stopping sequins, and melted metals, celebrities came to party this year. Lil Nas X and Dua Lipa were hard to miss in fluorescent green and pink hues. Taylor Swift shone bright in an asymmetric sequin gown for her historic night as she accepted the award for Artist of the Decade and became the most awarded artist in AMAs history. Lizzo’s meme-worthy mini bag may be the most talked-about style that graced the red carpet last night. The bite-sized Valentino bag gave ‘mini’ a whole new meaning. Billie Eilish amped up her characteristic style with a crystal mask, while Billy Porter continued his red carpet reign in a Thom Browne ensemble and Stephen Jones Millinery headpiece.
We identify the night’s top five trends below:
Next-Level Neon
Celebs were ready for the spotlight last night as they stepped out in shades of neon so bright they commanded attention. Despite its slowing growth, searches for neon are still up 28% compared to last year. It seems Selena Gomez, Lizzo, Lil Nas X, and Dua Lipa are planning on keeping this trend alive as they all sported different hues, from lime green to hot pink.
Asymmetric Sequins
Sequins are far from new, but celebrities are still finding new ways to wear them. Taylor Swift, AMA’s Artist of the Decade and the most awarded artist in AMAs history, shone bright in an asymmetrical emerald green gown. Carrie Underwood and Sofia Carson also sported asymmetrical dresses covered in sequins. Searches for sequin gowns are up 6% compared to last year.
Liquid Metallics
Up 43% in searches compared to last year, metallic gowns are having a moment. Celebrities were dripping in metal this year as metallic foil looks ruled the red carpet. Pia Mia opted for a rose gold jumpsuit, while Julissa Bermudez wore a chrome maxi. Both Keltie Knight and Sibley Scoles walked the carpet in metallic mini dresses.
Fashion-Forward Lapels
Men expressed their style sensibilities in a subtle, yet effective way. Shawn Mendes, Dan Smyers, and Shay Mooney wore contrasting lapels for a subtle two-tone effect, while Jaymes Vaughan and Damon Sharpe played mixed solids and patterns for a more daring look.
Head-to-Toe
Celebrities served looks from head-to-toe with headwear that captured everyone’s attention. Billie Eilish completed her checkered Burberry look with a mask veiled in crystals. Billy Porter is no stranger to headpieces (see his Emmys look) and he did not disappoint his fashion-forward following at the AMAs. Porter’s abstract headpiece was made by Stephen Jones Millinery and paired perfectly with his all-white Thom Browne ensemble. Christina Aguilera’s hooded gown turned the drama up a few notches, while Diplo’s cowboy hat and suede suit took us on a ride through the wild wild west.
